Bus 36: A Fateful Encounter
Amy stepped on the bus after a long and hard day. After her three tests, all she wanted to do was curl up on the couch to an episode of The Office.
She longed to find a Jim to her Pam, but it seemed she was out of luck. The frat boys at Northgate were gross and grabby, and the engineers at Zachary were smelly and socially anxious. Where could she find a good, well-adjusted boy to settle down with?
As the bus doors closed, Amy gauged her surroundings. All the seats were taken, so she was forced to stand and hold on for dear life. She had never been good at maintaining her balance and feared that the putrid mix of Axe body spray and body odor would conspire to make her fall. With one hand, Amy clung to the bar, and with the other, she pulled up a romance novel on her phone. Then it happened.
The bus took a sharp right turn. Amy quickly lost her balance and fell backwards. Expecting the hard, cold floor, Amy braced for impact. Instead, she was greeted by a pair of warm, powerful arms providing her safety and reassurance.
She looked up to the face of her savior. His fluffy brown hair appeared windswept and unkept. The stubble of facial hair littered his face, ending only at his sharp, clear jawline.
Paralyzed by fear, her savior helped her up, but not before leaning down and whispering into her ear, “Stupid women drivers”. Amy quivered with anticipation. Finally! An attractive, nice gentleman for her.
“I’m so sorry,” she said, curling a strand of her blonde hair behind her ear. “Thank you so much Mr. …?” “Mugdown.” He responded. “My name is John Mugdown.”
Amy searched for anything to say to him, but all she could think about was the feeling of falling into his buff arms. She longed for those arms to hold her one more time. Before she could say anything, the bus screeched to another halt.
“John Crompton Park,” the skanky voice shrilled. She saw him start to pack up his things and panicked. He couldn’t be getting off here, her apartment wasn’t for another two stops.
“Wait!” she screamed, but it was too late. As quickly as he entered her life, he was gone.
Once again, Amy was disappointed by a man who got off too early.
