Student Gives Up on Democracy After Voting Location Moved Off Campus

For the first time in over two decades, a presidential election will be held in which Texas A&M students will be unable to cast their votes on campus. The new local polling location is placed in the recently completed College Station town hall, which, while admittedly not far, is in no way the same as  traditional MSC voting booths.

No longer can one mosey on down to the west wing of the Memorial Student Center mid-study break and write in Reveille for Texas State Senator. Now, a patriotic Aggie has to hoof it all the way past the golf course just to face crossing the dreaded Texas Avenue by foot, a challenge just as likely to introduce them to truck-kun as a ballot box.

By now you’re probably wondering, who is this despondent student alluded to in the article’s title? Well, my fellow citizen, unfortunately, it’s me.

I, socially conscious and community oriented though I am, am unwilling to make the long march for any candidate. I’ll upvote the correct posts on Reddit and put a sticker on my backpack, but that’s about the extent of the effort I’ll expend for democracy.

Sure, I have numerous vehicle options and the town hall has plenty of parking available the entire time the voting is open, but those are just excuses meant to weaken my resolve. I’ll not just stand by and watch as they take away on-campus voting. I’ll stand by and write this article, which has to be worth at least ten — no, twenty votes for president.

And yes, I can easily request a ballot by mail, which has pre-paid return postage and is just as easy to fill out as an in-person ballot, complete with a state phone hotline available for any and all questions. But the point is to stand by your principles, even when they make little to no sense, which is exactly what the founding fathers would have wanted.
