Student Discovers Calling As Landscaper After 3rd Consecutive Year of Yard Work At Big Event
Phillip Jackson, junior biomedical sciences major and soon-to-be college dropout, has discovered his passion for landscaping after participating in Big Event this year.
“This is the third year in a row that I’ve been assigned to do yard work for an upper-middle-class couple, and I think it just clicked,” Jackson said. “I was weeding one of their eight flowerbeds and I was like, ‘I love this stuff. I love doing this.’”
Jackson’s job site officer and fellow volunteers don’t share his sentiment, but he doesn’t let that stop him.
“You can’t let other people harsh your mellow, man. Trimming bushes, skimming pools, carrying bags of dirt from the front to the back yard, it doesn’t matter to me,” Jackson said. “I’ve found what I want to do for the rest of my life. Plus, I don’t even need a degree to do it.”
Jackson plans to drop out of school and begin working with a landscaping company by the end of the month. When questioned about whether Big Event instilled him with any lasting values regarding selfless service, he was doubtful.
“Selfless service? I always thought the whole thing was about getting low-effort volunteer hours for your organization,” Jackson said. “But hey, who am I to complain? I found my calling while raking leaves for the affluent. If that’s not what selfless service is all about, I don’t know what is.”

The Battalion has a rat infestation, and one of these filthy rodents found its way onto our staff. We discovered him deep in the sewers under Sbisa after a long shift of hiding under the head chef’s hat. Now, he loves writing for us just as much as he loves pulling hair. When he’s not busy in the dining hall kitchen or writing articles for the other “publication” on campus, he cooks up articles for us. We’re happy to have him on our team, even though he leaves a copious amount of health code violations in his trail.
