Baptism Now Required to Run for Student Government

Student government candidates are now required to be baptized Christians to receive votes after the Student Body President signed an executive order last night.

Entitled “The Religious Legitimacy Order,” it requires candidates to publicly declare their faith and provide proof of baptism to appear on the ballot. It allows for sprinkling, dunking, and baptism at birth but excludes drive-by baptisms conducted during COVID-19. Although it does not differentiate between denominations, it explicitly states that Christianity is the official religion of the Student Government Association.

Peter Jones, the current Student Body President, signed the order after receiving a blessing from a local pastor, saying it was important to have leaders of character and the only way to stop the decline of Texas A&M University’s uniqueness was to bring faith back into office.

“As Christians at A&M, we are persecuted and underrepresented every day,” Jones said. “People of other religions just don’t have strong enough morals to lead this place.”

The move was hailed as a victory for the Kingdom of God all across the Christian bubble.

Eileen Palmer, a junior involved with Breakaway and a member of Grace Anderson, said she was glad to see the change.

“Imagine the horror of a non-Christian representing me,” Palmer said. “I’m so glad I don’t have to worry about atheists messing up God’s will for parking policies on campus anymore.”

The responses from candidates have been mixed. Some are following the regulation, with local baptisms rising by 15% this week. Others claim that the separation of church and state should exist in a diverse public college like Texas A&M. Regardless, voting will take place from February 29th to noon on March 1st at vote.tamu.edu.
