In Opening Remarks to Senate, Straus Argues “We Are All Family”

Imperiled Student Body President Mason Straus made an interesting argument in an effort to table the impeachment proceedings against him.

The Student Senate opened impeachment proceedings against the SBP earlier this month after he tried to appoint his younger brother, Grayson Straus, to a top Student Government Association position. The criticism of nepotism increased when the Senate considered Straus the Younger’s youth — he’s a sophomore — and overall lack of SGA experience.

“We’re an Aggie Family aren’t we?” Straus said as he began his remarks to the Student Senate.

“So then, what do you mean I unfairly appointed my brother to a position?” Straus said, motioning to his younger sibling. “Are we not all brothers and sisters? Are we not all family?”

“You are my brother,” he said, pointing to College of Engineering Senator Mike Adams. He continued, pointing to random Senators: “You are my sister, you are my brother, you are my brother too. You might be a cousin. You are my hermano,”  he said, nodding to Diversity and Inclusion Chair Senator Abel Castillo.

“We are all family here. As the leader of Texas A&M, I have no option but to appoint my family to executive roles.”

Senator Rebecca Brack, Rules and Regulations Chair representing Off Campus Residencies, motioned a point of order.

“Listen Mason,” she said in frustration. “We mean your blood brother. Your sibling. Grayson is your brother,” she said, emphasizing the sibling term; “This is different. You are literally related.”

Straus feigned shock, reiterating that “we are all blood related, Rebecca” and further explaining the relations between him, Mason, and his younger sibling Grayson are no different then “those I stand and sway with at Kyle.”

The impeachment trial is ongoing.
